Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)
What Are Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans?
INDUSTRIAL
If you perform an industrial activity, your facility is most likely required to obtain coverage under the Multi-Sector General Permit (MSGP) to authorize storm water discharges. As part of obtaining coverage under the MSGP, your facility is required to develop and maintain a SWPPP. In addition to meeting the general requirements in the MSGP, your SWPPP must also meet sector specific requirements which are based on your facility’s Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.
CONSTRUCTION
Construction activity that disturbs one acre or more of soil requires coverage under a Construction General Permit (CGP). Smaller sites need coverage too if they’re part of a larger common plan of development that will disturb one acre or more in total, such as a single lot in a subdivision or one phase of a larger commercial development. Every covered site must develop and maintain a SWPPP. Requirements also depend on project size. Sites disturbing one to less than five acres are generally treated as small construction activities, and sites disturbing five acres or more are treated as large construction activities, which typically come with additional paperwork, including a Notice of Intent.
